Syllables and Moras in Arabic

چکیده

Some of the most salient differences among Arabic vernaculars have to do with syllable structure. This study focuses on the syllabification patterns of three dialect groups, (1) VC-dialects, (2) C-dialects, and (3) CV-dialects,1 and argues that they differ in the licencing of SEMISYLLABLES, moras unaffiliated with syllables and adjoined to higher prosodic constituents. The analysis provides some evidence for a constraint-based version of Lexical Phonology, which treats word phonology and sentence phonology as distinct constraint systems which interact in serial fashion.

Selection and coordination: The articulatory basis for the emergence of phonological structure

Phonological theories commonly analyze speech utterances as composed of hierarchically organized units, such as features/gestures, segments, moras, and syllables, but it is not well understood why this hierarchical organization is observed. Moreover, current phonological theories and speech production models fail to explain cross-linguistic and developmental variation in the organization of uni...

Syllable Integrity

This paper argues that syllables may be divided by feet, based on an analysis of Banawá, an Arawan language of the Brazilian Amazon. This result is important for phonological theory because it improves our understanding of the variable roles of syllables and moras in the phonological systems of individual languages and because it underscores the urgent need for more fieldwork on the prosody of ...

Listeners’ Representations of Within-word Structure: Japanese Preschool Children

This study investigated how Japanese preschool children represented within-word structure, focusing on two phonological units, syllables and moras. The main question addressed in this study was how the acquisition of Japanese kana orthography influenced the choice of these units. The results of the three experiments showed that preschool children who were illiterate preferred syllable-sized rep...

Moras, Syllables, and Feet in Japanese

Han (1994) argues that moms are isochronous units, but no inference is drawn for isochrony regarding the length of the syllable in Japanese. As the tempo of speech increases, however, the phonetic reality of moms seems to become less obvious (Beckman 1982 and Larish 1989). This paper provides a new insight on the apparent gap between phonology and phonetics, which comes from the distinction bet...

Semi-Automatic Segmentation System for Syllables Extraction from Continuous Arabic Audio Signal

The paper describes a speaker independent segmentation system for breaking Arabic uttered sentences into its constituent syllables. The goal is to construct a database of acoustical Arabic syllables as a step towards a syllable-based Arabic speech verification/recognition system. The proposed technique segments the utterances based on maxima extraction from delta function of 1st MFC coefficient...
